WHAT CAN BE DONE TO STOP THIS
Japan plans to take more than 900 minke whales and 10 fin whales this year for what it claims are scientific purposes. Greenpeace believes it is a commercial hunt. The opposition today urged the Australian government to take much tougher action to stop the kill.
The anti-whaling campaigners found the fleet yesterday morning about 160km off the coast of Antarctica, more than 2000km south of Australia.
Senator Campbell said there was no science involved in Japan's whaling activities.
"They are doing this under the scientific clause of the whaling convention," he said.
"(But) there is no science involved in slaughtering animals, seeing them drown in their own blood, dragging them onto a vessel and slicing them up into pieces and sending them back to Japan."
He again urged the Greenpeace activists to be "productive and positive" and to respect the laws of the ocean.
Green peace do some great work out in the open oceans, But its up to us to support there actions write to your m.ps or senators or goverment and stop japan flouting the law in the name of science.
