A member of the notorious Shankill Butchers murder gang was banned from driving yesterday and fined over £1,000 for motoring offences. Edward McIlwaine, 52, from Woodvale Avenue, Belfast, did not appear at the Magistrates Court to answer six summonses after he was apprehended last October.
Resident Magistrate Peter Murphy said he had before him a doctor's certificate stating that McIlwaine was suffering from depression. McIlwaine, a former soldier, was jailed for 15 years in 1979 on charges of kidnapping, assault and possessing weapons with intent.
McIlwaine was fined £500 on each of two summonses for driving without insurance or a driving licence and was disqualified for six months. He was fined a further £150 for not having a vehicle test certificate.
