Commander Vows To 'Take On' Loyalist Paramilitaries
By Simon Hunter
Tuesday 20th September 2005The PSNI District Commander for north Down has promised to "take on" loyalist paramilitaries operating in Holywood.
Supt Graham Shields yesterday vowed that, with the help of people in the town, he would remove the control that loyalists have on certain areas of Holywood.
He was referring to the trouble in the Loughview estate in July, when a spillover of the loyalist feud led to thugs lining the street watching families forced to leave the area.
When a member of the audience asked Mr Shields about how he would help the people living in fear in the Loughview estate, the District Commander said: "It's very difficult for us to deal with it without the support of the public. I understand where you're coming from, but we have to stand up to these people.
"If any information has been given to police, we have acted on it. We have been prepared to deal with these people and to take them on."
In response to a tabled question at the North Down District Policing Partnership meeting in Holywood, Mr Shields confirmed as much as possible was being done to break the loyalist stranglehold on the community.
"We are determined to address criminal activity regardless of what type," said Mr Shields. To do this, we need the support of the community and we need information and evidence from the community. I will continue to make resources available for policing in Holywood."
While he would not confirm the number of people believed to be affiliated with loyalist organisations in Holywood, Mr Shields did point out some of the recent successes against their criminal operations.
"We have made significant drug seizures and related arrests in the Loughview estate.
"The total estimated value of the drugs recovered amounts to £450,000," he said. "We have also continued in our strategy in relation to flags, particularly in Holywood with LVF flags. Two years ago, we were the first to bring people to court on the matter. There are five people pending prosecution for the same type of offence."
A number of firearms and ammunition have also been recovered in the Loughview estate in recent months. its good to see that the police are trying to clean up my old estate my sister lives there as i have said before it like all over the province there is intimidation going on a mother whose son was killed by uvf is being harrassed by uvf . these men are cowards who pray on the weak
